Making Waves: a woman in this man's navy

I grew up way out in the boonies in northwestern Pennsylvania and didn't know a thing about the military. My mother, who was not very worldly, saw a notice at the local post office about women in the military. She came home with a brochure and said, "Look, LouAnne. You could be a journalist in the navy. They will pay for your college and teach you to be a journalist -- and it won't be just a job, it will be an adventure."

It certainly was an adventure! I went to journalism school and broadcasting school, and then I went to the Philippines where I lived in a barrio with a Filipino family for two years. It was wonderful. I learned a little Tagalog: mag beer muna tayo. O, anong sarap! (That was a radio commercial)

Making Waves is out of print. But I am working on a YA novel about a young woman who joins the navy to become a journalist...and she sounds a bit like me! Stay tuned for more developments....
